Winter League Round 1 October / November Augusta Golf Ltd Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th October
24 Woll Members played in excellent conditions for the last weekend in October. Saturday brought a murky start for the early risers and with next to no wind to contend with good scores expected. First out were Douglas Oliver and Jake Mackenzie who returned very good scores of 38 and 37 points respectively. Doug’s lead did not last long as John Heatley returned a very impressive 39 points, which on any other day would be a winning score, sadly for John it was not to be as Keith Turnbull carded a superb 41 points which included one non scoring hole. 47 year old Keith, who plays off a 15 handicap, had just returned from a golf trip to Spain in which he won the coveted Green Jacket in the 2007 Teri Bus Tour proved to be the star performer over the opening weekend. On the Sunday after some very heavy over night rain the sun shone for a small group of golfers, again some impressive scores were posted. 2006 Winter League Champion Ian Campbell carded a very good 39 points and this proved to be the best of the Sunday scores. With all the months sponsored by local suppliers it is sure to be a well contested Winter League. Best 2 Scores over the month will win 1 Dozen Pro V1 Balls from our sponsor Augusta Golf Ltd.
The overall result for Round 1 is below.
1st Keith Turnbull 41 pts 2nd John Heatley 39 pts (bih) 3rd Ian Campbell 39 pts
Two’s Sweep Jake Mackenzie & Hugh Robertson.

Top man on the day was local teacher Andrew Beattie whose superb birdie three on the eighteenth which gave him 4 Stableford points and edged out Jake Mackenzie into second with Michael Davis third. As with the week before, 2s were hard to come by, but three golfers did and special mention to Jake Mackenzie who had a two for the second week on trot.
Week 2 Result

Winter League Round 3 October / November Augusta Golf Ltd November 10th & 11th
The third round of the Winter League again attracted a record entry of 32 hardy golfers. The scoring as like previous weeks was very good and it took a golfer to break the 40 point barrier to claim the top prize. That golfer was Ian Campbell, who scored an amazing 43 points which included two non scoring holes. Second was Charlie Tait from Hawick with a very good 39 points and in third was the very consistent John Heatley also from Hawick with 38 points. 2s were very hard to come by an only two were recorded out of 32 competitors. The two best scores for the month to win the Sponsors prize of 1 Dozen Pro V1 Woll Logo Balls. At this moment it would seem to be heading to this weeks winner Ian Campbell who has a best combined 39 & 43 points. With some very good scoring the handicapper has intervened has cut several of the top players in particular Ian Campbell who he was duly cut from 13 to 9 for his efforts. The overall competition will become a little clearer after the sixth week and the leader board will then start to take shape.
Week 3 Result 1st Ian Campbell 43 pts 2nd Charlie Tait 39 pts 3rd John Heatley 38 pts
Two’s Winners this week were Michael Hogg, Alan Brunton and John Robertson.
Winter League Round 4 October / November Augusta Golf Ltd Weekend November 17th & 18th
Damp conditions greeted the entrants over the weekend of the 4th round of the winter league. Top man was John Borthwick from Galashiels who was the only player to break the magical 40 point barrier. John amassed a superb 42 points which included a (bih) of 22 stableford points. Second was left hander Norrie Stevens from Hawick who returned a very good 39 points with John Robertson also from Hawick who had 38 points. For the first time this season no 2s were recorded so there will be a roll over for week 5. The Handicapper again was ruthless and the top three were all cut, John Borthwick by 3 and Norrie Stevens by 2 and John Robertson by 1. Ian Campbell still leads the best 2 combined scores for the month 39 & 43. John Heatley has proved to be the most consistent golfer so far with scores of 39, 38, 38 & 35, but it could have been one point better as he over looked a wrong score on one hole on Saturday made by his marker, could this prove a costly error, only time will tell. Week 4 Result
1st John Borthwick 42pts 2nd Norrie Stevens 39 pts 3rd John Robertson 38 pts
Round 5 October / November Sponsored by Augusta Golf Ltd November 24th & 25th
What a weekend!
Record Score for Winter League and a Hole in 1
The last weekend in November brought very changeable conditions and this reflected on the entry with the smallest field so far this season of only 17 competitors. Saturday in particular was a mix of cold, wet and windy conditions, despite that a hardy group played and some respectable scores were recorded. Top man on the Saturday was week four winner John Borthwick from Galashiels, who despite being cut three shots from his win the previous week scored an excellent 36 points. Second on the Saturday was the very consistent Doug Oliver from Hawick who edged out his playing partner Jake Mackenzie. History was made on Sunday with a record score in the winter league and for the first time ever a hole in 1. Playing off a handicap of 17 Alan Brunton from Selkirk amassed an amazing 46 points with 1 non scoring hole. Two halves of 23 points, which included a putt from off the green for a birdie 3 net 2 and 4 points on the 18th Hole. Gary Dalgliesh from Hawick achieved the Holy Grail for all Golfers a hole in 1 on the 136 yard 11th hole using a 7 iron and in so doing gaining the first 5 point hole in winter league history. Three players had a 2 on their cards Alan Brunton, David Brown and the very constant Andrew Beattie. The handicapper has intervened and slashed 4 strokes from Alan’s handicap reducing him to a new low of 13. Second on the weekend was Rob Turnbull from Hawick who posted on what would have been on any other day a winning score of 40 points. Alan’s amazing score leapfrogged him into the lead for the best two scores of the month. He wins a dozen Titleist Pro V1 golf balls courtesy of our sponsor of the month Augusta Golf Ltd. Round 11 Sponsored by Golden Casket January 5th & 6th
Heavy snow put pay to Saturday’s golf but amazingly the bottom 9 holes re-opened on the Sunday for anyone keen enough for a game. Only 1 member decided to take on the old nine holes that man being John Borthwick and he added a very impressive 35 points to his four scores so far this season. Based on his five scores so far John would be in third place overall so his day was very worthwhile. If the weather were to put pay to any other of the January weekends then John would win the overall prize of a six and a half pound jar of Hawick Balls sweets.
